St. Paul – The Gustavus men’s tennis team had another busy day Saturday with three matches on the schedule in less than 24 hours. The Gusties continued their great season by winning all three, with senior Marcel Gyswyt (Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins) leading the way in two of the victories. Gyswyt was a perfect 4-0 Saturday, winning two singles and two doubles matches, as his team won a crucial MIAC match and defeated an NCAA Division II opponent. For his performance, Gyswyt was named the MIAC Men’s Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week.
Gyswyt started his busy 4-0 day by helping Gustavus roll to a 9-0 MIAC win over Saint John’s in Sartell, Minn. He scored a straight-sets win at No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-3) and an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles to help the Gusties stay atop the MIAC standings. Later that day in Sartell, Gustavus wasn’t intimidated by Division II St. Cloud State, as the team scored a 6-3 victory. Gyswyt was impassive against his D-II opponents, winning 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3 singles and 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. This season he is 7-1 in singles matches, 16-3 overall in doubles matches and 12-2 in doubles play in Gustavus’ spring dual matches.
Thanks to Saturday’s three wins, Gustavus improved to 17-3 overall in 2014, and the Gusties are still unbeaten at 6-0 in conference play as they seek their 26th-straight MIAC title. Gyswyt and his teammates will take the rest of March off before heading East on their spring trip to open the month of April. Gustavus will play six matches in five days in Massachusetts from April 1-5.
