St. Paul – The Gustavus men’s tennis team continued their success in conference play in a big way Saturday, defeating three MIAC foes in the same day – all by 9-0 scores. In the team’s first win of the day, a 9-0 victory over Bethel, senior Juan Luis Chu (Lima, Peru/Newton College) led the way, picking up impressive wins at both of the team’s top spots in the singles and doubles lineup. For his performance, Chu was named the MIAC Men’s Tennis Athlete-of-the-Week.

In the team’s sweep of the Royals, Chu helped pick up two of the nine points with his play at No. 1 singles and doubles. He dropped just two games in a 6-0, 6-2, straight-sets singles victory, and teamed up with Joe MacGibbon for an 8-3 win in Gustavus’ top doubles spot. With the wins, Chu improved to 9-2 in singles play and 10-2 in doubles play in 2014. The Gusties also added 9-0 wins over Concordia and Macalester Saturday.

Thanks to the three wins, Gustavus remained unbeaten in its quest for a 26th-straight MIAC title at 5-0 in conference play, and the team improved to 13-1 overall. All five of the Gusties’ MIAC wins have been by 9-0 scores so far. This weekend, the team will hit the road for a trip to California for the Stag-Hen Invitational in Claremont, Calif. Gustavus opens the invite against Emory Friday at noon, then will play again Friday at 4:30 p.m., with the final match of the tournament on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
