St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s tennis team picked up a pair of 9-0 wins to open conference play on Saturday, defeating Concordia and Macalester at the Swanson Tennis Center. With the pair of wins, Gustavus improves to 5-1 overall and begins MIAC play 2-0.
Gustavus opened the day with a 9-0 win over Concordia. The Gusties dropped just eight points in the entire match, registering straight-set wins at each position in singles. Sidney Dirks (So., St. Peter, Minn.), Aryn Eckstrom (Fy., St. James, Minn.), and Samantha Silcox (So., Mountain Iron, Minn.) each defeated their singles opponent 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles, the duos of Annie Mahoney (Jr., Duluth, MInn.) and Lizzy Stancyk and Calleigh Carlson (Fy., St. Peter, Minn.) and Sidney Dirks both registered shutouts with 8-0 wins.
The Gustie women followed the morning sweep with another sweep in the afternoon against Macalester. Each Gustie in the lineup recorded straight-set wins in the singles competition. Annnie Mahoney led the way with a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Aryn Eckstrom had the closest match in singles, outlasting Gabby Queenan in a second set tiebreaker to win 6-3, 7-6.
Gustavus again swept the doubles competition, winning 8-2 at No. 1 and 8-3 at No. 2. The St. Peter tandem of Calleigh Carlson and Sidney Dirks rounded out the sweep with a sweep of their own, winning 8-0 at third doubles.
The Gusties will next take on the College of Saint Benedict in Sartell, Minn., on Sunday, March 16th. That match is set for a 2:00 p.m., start.
