Milwaukee – The Gustavus Adophus men’s tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Carthage College in its season-opener on Friday, Feb. 7 at the Pleasant Valley Tennis & Fitness Club.
The Gusties picked up three wins in the doubles before completing the sweep with six wins in singles play. Gustavus’s No. 1 doubles team of Mya Smith-Dennis (Sr., Savage, Minn.) and Motasem Al-Houni (Tripoli, Libya) found itself in a back-and-forth battle against Alex Boomgarden and Pawel Jaworski. In the end, the Gusties were able to persevere 9-8 with an 8-2 win in the tiebreak.
Gustavus’s No. 2-through-6 singles players cruised to straight-set wins, while Smith-Dennis edged Boomgarden at the No. 1 spot 7-5, 3-6, 11-9.
The Gustavus men’s tennis team will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 8 when it takes on Washington University (Mo.) at 3:00 p.m. in Milwaukee.
