St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team will travel to Collegeville, Minn., tonight for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) match up with Saint John’s University. The Gusties will look to continue their strong start to the season after defeating Augsburg 74-54 on Monday night at Gus Young Court. Meanwhile, Saint John’s will look to get back on track after falling to Hamline 72-50 on Monday night in St. Paul. Gustavus enters the contest with a record of 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC, while Saint John’s comes in with a record of 3-3 overall and 1-1 in MIAC play. Tonight’s opening tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
Tonight’s contest marks the 170th meeting between Gustavus and Saint John’s in men’s basketball. Gustavus controls the all-time series with a record of 106-93. However, Saint John’s swept the regular season series a year ago, winning 69-65 in St. Peter on Dec. 1st and taking the second game 59-57 in Collegeville on Jan. 26th.
The last time the Gusties took the floor was on Monday night in a 74-54 win over Augsburg at Gus Young Court. Trailing 12-11 with 12:58 remaining n the opening half, an offensive rebound and put-back by Brody Ziegler sparked a 9-0 run that gave Gustavus a 20-12 lead that the Auggies would never recover from in the 20-point win. Isaac Tapp led the way for the Gusties with a career-high 20 points on 9 of 11 shooting from the field and a team-high four rebounds. Brian Jacobs was the only other Gustie to finish in double-figures with 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting and also added four rebounds.
