Le Sueur, Minn. – With over 150 alumni, family, and friends of the Gustavus Adolphus football program in attendance, the 23rd Annual Golden Gustie Football Alumni Golf Tournament was held at the Le Sueur Country Club on Friday afternoon.
“Today is a such fun day for everyone involved and we couldn’t have asked for better weather,” said Head Coach Peter Haugen. “The Le Sueur Country Club has been such a great host over the years. Jerry Carpenter and Jeff Fish, along with their staff, do such a tremendous job bringing this whole tournament together. We couldn’t run this event at such a high class level without their efforts.”
This year’s participants were treated to an 18-hole four-man scramble tournament with cart, lunch, swag bag, and dinner following the day’s event.
“We have been blessed with very generous donations this year,” commented Haugen. “Thanks in large part to the efforts of Richard Olson, we have a record 36 hole sponsors on the course. Richard does an amazing job reaching out to alumni and friends who truly care about Gustie football.”
“This event is pivotal because it makes it possible for us to run the top-class program that is Gustavus football. We’re thankful for all the alumni support we receive and know that it is because of their contributions that we are able to provide our student-athletes with a unique collegiate experience.”
With training camp right around the corner, the tournament also generates a great deal of buzz for the current Gustavus football team.
“A lot of guys have talked to me about this upcoming season, how I like our recruiting class, and what the league will be like. It’s great to hear the alumni get excited about Gustie football this time of year. This is time of year where guys start thinking about their own career and this tournament provides a chance to connect with those former teammates and coaches,” said Haugen.
The Gustavus football team will report to campus on Thursday, Aug. 22 for training camp. The Gusties will open their 2013 campaign with a non-conference test against Simpson College on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1:00 p.m. on Hollingsworth Field. Gustavus defeated Simpson in the 2012 opener by the score of 35-26 on the road in Indianola, Iowa.
