St. Peter, Minn. – Gustavus Adolphus sophomore swimmer Jennifer Strom (Rochester, Minn.) has been named the MIAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Athlete-of-the Week for her performance at the Saint John’s/Saint Ben’s Mini-Invitational held Saturday afternoon in Collegeville. Strom won three individual event titles and was a part of two relay wins. The Gusties cruised to a first place finish at the triangular after registering 1,870 points.
“Jen is off to a great start this year,” said Head Coach Jon Carlson. “She’s a hard worker in the pool and has really stepped up as a leader out of it. It’s all about progression and continuing to improve for her now. With only one competition between now and January, the team will need to dig deep and push each other in practice day-after-day.”
Jennifer Strom’s afternoon started with a victory in the 1,000 freestyle after she touched the wall in 11:01.32, more than 20 seconds faster than the second place finisher from Morningside. Strom would later add another win in a freestyle race by taking the 500 free with a time of 5:50.90. Both of her times in the freestyle swims rank inside the top four in the MIAC this season.
Her top individual swim of the day came in the 400 individual medley where she swam to a first place mark in 4:46.12. Her time in the 400 IM is currently the fastest in the conference. The sophomore was also a member of the first place 200-medley relay (1:50.97) and 400-free relay (3:43.28) teams, giving her five event wins at the meet.
With two meets under her belt in the early stages of 2012-13 season, Strom remains undefeated in individual races with a total of six gold medal swims. Her first place swims in the 100 (1:06.35) and 200 breaststroke (2:24.81), and 200 IM (2:13.13) at the St. Olaf dual to start the year all rank first in the MIAC this season.
The Gustavus swimming and diving teams will be off over the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to the pool on Friday, Nov. 30. The Gusties will travel to Minneapolis to take part in the two-day Jena Freeman Invitational taking place Friday and Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
