On the opening day of the tournament Friday, Sept. 31, soccer fans were treated to a pair of nail-biting battles. In the opening match of the afternoon, St. Thomas and Puget Sound played to a 2-2 tie after two overtimes. UC-Santa Cruz then came out on top of the host Gusties in the nightcap with a 1-0 victory.
St. Thomas took an early lead with a goal by Alex Bernhardt in the 15th minute. Puget Sound answered back with a goal just before the half at 43:15 to tie the match at 1-1. It would take until the 80th minute before St. Thomas’ Brett Day found the back of the net to give the Tommies a 2-1 edge. The Loggers would not go quietly as Colin McIntosh tied the game at 2-2 with a goal at the 86:03 mark. Neither squad could come up with the game-winner in two overtimes, resulting in a season-opening tie.
Unlike in the first match, goals were hard to come by in the UC-Santa Cruz vs. Gustavus game. It wasn’t until the 79th minute that Banana Slug Phillip Murphy was able to snap the scoreless tie with what turned out to be the game-winning goal. The Gusties could not answer in the remaining minutes and UC-Santa Cruz picked up a season-opening 1-0 win.
