Women’s Tennis Concludes Spring Break At Midwest Invite

The Gustavus women’s tennis team concluded Spring Break at the Midwest Invitational held April 6-7 in Madison, Wis.  The Gusties went 1-3 at the invite, defeating Luther 9-0, yet suffering losses to Chicago (9-0), Carleton (5-4), and UW-Whitewater (5-0).  Following the weekend, Gustavus is now 10-7 overall.

The Gusties kicked off the weekend with a 9-0 victory over Luther on Saturday, sweeping the doubles and singles competitions.

Gustavus was on the opposite end of a sweep later in the day, falling 9-0 to sixth-ranked Chicago.  Megan Gaard and Laurel Krebsbach battled the top-ranked doubles team in the Central Region Kendra Higgins and Carmen VacaGuzman to a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles.  The Chicago duo prevailed in the end, winning the superbreaker 10-5.

The Gusties dropped their second-straight match by the score of 5-4 to Carleton early in the day on Sunday.  The Knights earned two points from doubles before picking up wins at No. 1, 3, and 4 singles.

Gaard and Krebsbach prevailed over Kathryn Schmidt and Erin Gudul 8-5 at No. 1 for Gustavus lone point in doubles.  In singles play, the Gusties earned points via Gaard edging Bridget Doyle (6-4, 6-4), Megan Born topping Molly Hemes (6-3, 6-0), and Sophie Horton defeating Katherine Greenberg (6-0, 6-2).

Gustavus weekend came to a close with a 5-0 loss to UW-Whitewater in a match played to decision.  The Warhawks took three points from doubles before getting wins at No. 4 and 5 singles.

The Gustavus women’s tennis team will head back into conference play this weekend when it takes on Hamline and St. Catherine on Saturday, April 7.  The Gusties take on the Pipers at 10:00 a.m. and the Wildcats at 3:00 p.m.
