Gustavus men’s tennis player Daniel Pomeranc (Sau Paulo, Brazil) has been named MIAC Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week for his outstanding play at the 2012 ITA National Indoor Championship last weekend in St. Peter, Minn. Pomeranc won all three of his doubles competitions at the No. 3 spot, all of which were against nationally ranked squads.
Each of Pomeranc’s victories was decided 9-8 in a tiebreaker over teams ranked in the top 11 nationally. On Friday, the Sau Paulo, Brazil native defeated second-ranked Emory – the eventual champion of the tournament – by a mark of 9-8 (7-2). On Saturday, Pomeranc started the day with a 9-8 (10-8) win over eighth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer and capped of the tournament with a 9-8 (7-5) victory over No. 11 University of Chicago. The Gusties lost their first two matches but wound up defeating Chicago for seventh place.
This season, Pomeranc is 2-1 (2-0 MIAC) in singles play and 6-1 (3-0 MIAC) in doubles competition. As a team, Gustavus is 6-4 overall and perfect in the MIAC at 5-0. The Gustie men return to action Saturday with home matches against Elmhurst (9:00 a.m.) and Grinnell (6:00 p.m.).
