Men’s Tennis Trumps Hamline 8-1

The Gustavus men’s tennis team claimed 8-of-9 competitions against Hamline University on Saturday morning at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center, earning its first victory of the season. The Gusties started the year with a pair of losses to Hawaii Pacific University (1-8) and BYU-Hawaii (4-5) last week in Hawaii.

The Gustavus men’s tennis team claimed 8-of-9 competitions against Hamline University on Saturday morning at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center, earning its first victory of the season. The Gusties started the year with a pair of losses to Hawaii Pacific University (1-8) and BYU-Hawaii (4-5) last week in Hawaii.

Each Gustie victory was won in straight sets and the lone loss took a third set for the decision. Mya Smith-Dennis (No. 1), Juan Luis Chu (No. 3), Tyler Johnson (No. 4), Joey MacGibbon (No. 5) and Daniel Pomeranc (No. 6) all won in the singles competition. Patrick Clark took Hamline’s Robert Becker to a third set in the No. 2 singles match, but lost 10-8 in the final set for final score of 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.

In the doubles competition, Clark and Johnson claimed the No. 1 doubles 8-5 over Becker and Bernard Mitambo. Luis Chu and Smith-Dennis defeated Sam Teitelbaum and Andrew Lutz 8-1 in the No. 2 spot, and in the No. 3 match-up, Pomeranc and MacGibbon ousted Robert Johnson and Brendan Fitzpatrick 8-0.

Next Saturday, the Gustie men will host a trio of MIAC opponents at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter. The day begins with a 9:00 a.m. match against Concordia, followed by a 1:00 p.m. match with Bethel and ends with a 4:00 p.m. showdown against Macalester.
