After posting back-to-back MIAC victories in its last two games, the Gustavus women’s soccer team went out with a whimper falling to Macalester 2-0 Saturday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn. in the Gusties’ season finale. Gustavus concludes its 2011 campaign 5-12-0 overall and 3-5-0 in the MIAC, while the Scots improve to 11-6-1 overall and 7-3-1 in league play, securing the fourth and final spot in the MIAC Playoffs.
Following a scoreless first half, Macalester opened the second period with a breakaway goal by Maggie Molter at the 47:22 mark – Molter was assisted by Georgia Cloepfil for her seventh goal of the season. Cloepfil took the role as the goal-scorer with just :50 remaining in the contest on a one-timer from Izzi Speer to bring the game to a 2-0 final.
The Scots took 19 shots throughout the contest, while the Gusties rarely found the opportunity to take a shot with three on the day.
Sophomore forward Amanda Cartony finished the season as the Gusties’ top-point scorer with 12 points on a team-leading six goals. Junior midfielder Kristin Moen was the only other player on the team to record multiple goals on the season with two.
Gustavus keeper Jessica Richert tallied seven saves in the season finale, bringing her season total to 120. In her first season as a full-time starter, the junior goalie posted a 1.82 goals against average, save percentage of .795 and a 5-12-0 record with two shutouts.
