In the second day of competition at the USTA/ITA Small College Championships, both Amrik Donkena (Rochester, Minn.) – in singles, and the pair of Donkena and Mya Smith-Dennis (Savage, Minn.) fell in the second round. The Small College Championships are being held at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala.
Amrik Donkena fell to Andrew La Cava of Whitman College in three sets to start the day. Donkena won the first set 7-5 before dropping two-straight 6-3, 6-3.
Amrik will take on Yevgeny Perepelov of Hunter College tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. in the seventh place match.
In Donkena and Mya Smith-Dennis’ second round doubles match later at 1:00 p.m., the Gustie pair fell to Ben and Andrew Guzick of Vassar College in three sets. The Guzick’s took the first set 6-1, while Donkena and Smith-Dennis battled back to take the second 6-0. In the super-breaker third set, it was the Vassar duo outlasting the Gusties 10-7 to win the match and advance to the fifth place match.
The Gustie duo got back on track later in the evening with a straight set victory in the seventh place match. Donkena and Smith-Dennis defeated Nicholas Ballou and Ray Worley of California Lutheran 6-3, 6-0 to cap the tournament.
