The Gustavus men’s golf team fell nine positions down the leader board from day one and are in 16th place after shooting a collective 328 (+40) in the second round of the Gordin Classic NCAA D3 Preview on Monday in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. With two of three rounds complete, the Gusties have posted a score of 301-328-629 (+53).
Christopher Newport University jumped into first place with a day two score of 294 and is 15-over-par through two rounds. Methodist University dropped from first to second place with a two-day score of 292-304-596 (+20), while Oglethrope University sits one stroke behind Methodist with a shot total of 304-293-597 (+21).
It was a rough day on the course for the Gusties as each of the five members increased their shot total from day one. Tyler McMorrow tallied the lowest round two mark for Gustavus with an eight-over-par 80 and is now in a tie for 63rd place (79-80-159). Day one’s top shooter for the Gusties, Andrew Oakes, shot an 82 (+10) and is tied for 45th (74-82-156). Alex Kolquist joins McMorrow in 63rd place after shooting an 11-over-par 83 (76-83-159). Simon Erlandsson also shot an 83 on day two and is tied for 55th (75-83-158), while Trevor Gervais has a total of 76-84-160 and is tied for 84th.
“Not a good day at all on the course,” Gustavus Head Coach Scott Moe acknowledged. “We put ourselves in bad situations, did not respond well and struggled to find the fairways – needs to be a lot better tomorrow and I think it will be.”
Noah Ratner of Guilford College shot a two-under-par 70 on day two and is in first place with a shot total of 72-70-142 (-2). Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethrope and day one’s leader, Ben Nihart of Greensboro College, are in a tie for second with round two totals of 73-70-143 (-1) and 67-76-143 (-1), respectively.
The Gusties will conclude play at the Gordin Classic, held at the Mission Inn Resort, with round three on Tuesday.
