The Gustavus women’s tennis team suffered two defeats in the final day of competition to finish fourth at the Midwest Invitational held April 8-9 in Madison, Wis. The Gusties lost 7-2 to Dension University in the semifinals, then fell 5-4 in to Washington University (Mo.) in the third place match. The University of Chicago went on to win the tournament, defeating Denison in the championship match 5-1.
In the semifinal match against Denison, #2 singles player Megan Gaard recorded the only Gustavus win in singles, defeating Sarah Short 6-4, 6-3. Marianne Barau and Alex Erickson picked up the other point in doubles by topping Alex Marcell and Kelsey Geppner 9-8 (7-4) at #2 doubles.
In the third place match against Washington, the Bears took two of three points in doubles. Gaard and Sam Frank were able to edge Theresa Petraskova and Evelyn Qin at #1 doubles to earned the Gusties a point heading into singles play.
Washington’s edge in doubles turned out to be the difference, as both squads picked up three points in singles. Sam Frank took down Evely Qin 5-4, 6-2 at #1 singles, Barau defeated Petraskova 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) at #2, and Alex Erickson beat Paige Madara in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 at #4.
The Gusties, who are currently 10-9 on the season, will return to MIAC play on Saturday, April 16 with a pair of matches against Bethel and Concordia in Arden Hills, Minn. The Gusties will take on Bethel and 10:00 a.m. and Concordia at 4:00 p.m.
