The Gustavus baseball team registered its first win in league play with a 10-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader at Saint Mary’s on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals bounced back to claim game two by the score of 8-2. Gustavus is now 3-11 overall and 1-3 in league play.
In the first game, the Gusties broke open a tight game with four runs in the third inning and four more runs in the fourth inning pushing their lead to 9-2 through four innings of play. In the third, Gustavus scored its four runs with the help of three Cardinal errors and a balk, while in the fourth the Gusties got a clutch single by Scott Benjamin to drive in two runs Cody Sukalski drove in a run with a double. Sukalski was also the star on the mound where he limited Saint Mary’s to two runs (one earned) and seven hits in claiming the complete game victory.
In the second game, the Cardinals exploded for five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back on their way to the 8-2 win. Gustavus scored one run in the second and the other in the seventh. Mitch Johnson led the Gusties at the plate knocking out two hits in three at-bats and driving in a run. Kellan Euerle and Boyden Lee scored for Gustavus. Tim Miller got roughed up on the mound for the Gusties as he seven earned runs and eight hits in one and one-third innings of work. Scott Benjamin pitched two and two-thirds innings in relief and Connor Norris closed out the game pitching the final two innings. Chris Bogie turned in a fine performance on the mound for Saint Mary’s as he limited the Gusties to four hits and no earned runs in picking up the complete game victory.
Gustavus will host Augsburg in a MIAC doubleheader on Tuesday, April 12 at 2:30 pm.
