Fresh off its first place finish at the 2011 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships, the Gustavus women’s swimming and diving team will send eight athletes to compete at the 2011 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships held at the University of Tennessee March 23-26 in Knoxville, Tenn. Kelsey Lucia (St. Cloud, Minn.) was the sole individual qualifier and will compete in the 50 and 100 freestyle at the meet. The 200 free, 200 medley, and 400 free relay teams comprised of Serena Elthon (Faribault, Minn.), Dajana Vidovic (Coleraine, Minn.), Sarah Hund (Willmar, Minn.), Alissa Tinklenberg (Willmar, Minn.), Carley Mosher (Great Falls, Mont.), Laura Drake (Mendota Heights, Minn.), and Steph Korba (Lakeville, Minn.) rounds out the group Gustavus swimmers set to race at the NCAA Championships.
Kelsey Lucia enters the meet ranked fifth in the 50 free with a time of 23.30 and 15th in the 100 free with a time of 51.57. Lucia was an All-MIAC performer in both events, becoming conference champion in the 50 and finishing second in the 100. She will also swim the 100 back due to her NCAA provisional mark of 1:00.11 (40th) in the event.
The 200 free relay team comprised of Lucia, Serena Elthon, Dajana Vidovic, and Sarah Hund enters the championships ranked second with a time of 1:33.66. The 200 medley relay team of Carley Mosher, Laura Drake, Steph Korba, and Lucia ranks 12th (1:45.95), while the 400 free relay team of Hund, Alissa Tinklenberg, Vidovic, and Lucia ranks11th (3:29.21).
The 800 medley and 400 medley relay teams will also compete at the championships. Mosher, Hund, Tinklenberg, and Vidovic of the 800 medley relay rank 20th (7:43.16), while Mosher, Drake, Korba, and Lucia of the 400 medley relay team rank 21st (3:54.25).
Others set to compete in individual races after hitting provisional marks in their respective events include Dajana Vidovic, Carley Mosher, Sarah Hund, Steph Korba, and Laura Drake. Vidovic will swim in three freestyle races including the 50 (28th, 23.90), 100 (34th, 52.31), and 200 (36th, 1:53.98). Mosher ranks 22nd (2:04.40) in the 200 back and 29th in the 100 back (58.05). Hund will swim the 50 free (29th, 23.93), and Drake will compete in the 200 breaststroke (30th, 2:24.31).
The NCAA Championships will take place in the Allan Jones Aquatic Center and will begin with the 500-free trials on Wednesday, March 23 at 10:00 a.m. Beloit College and The College of Wooster have been selected as co-hosts for the meet.
