The Gusties celebrate Tam Meuwissen's game-winning goal in the first period.

The Gustavus women’s hockey team moved into sole possession of first place in the MIAC with a hard-fought 1-0 win over St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter.  Tam Meuwissen scored the game-winner for the Gusties when she tipped a blast by Kirstin Peterson from the blue line past Tommie goaltender Alise Riedel at the 16:07 mark of the first period. Gustavus goaltender Danielle Justice made 23 saves and registered her third shutout of the season.

Head Coach Mike Carroll was pleased with his team’s effort.  Carroll stated, “It was good to see the team respond with a strong effort today after a disappointing performance last night.”  He added, “We really fore-checked aggressively and that is directly related to effort.  We didn’t finish quite like we need to, but the goal we did score was a pretty one with a good finish by Tam.”

The Gusties will wrap up their pre-Christmas schedule with an important West Region game at UW-River Falls next Friday, Dec. 10.
