The Gustavus women’s hockey team opened its 2010-11 season with a convincing weekend sweep of Concordia University in Mequon, Wis. The Gusties claimed a 5-0 win on Friday night and then posted a 6-0 victory on Saturday afternoon. First year forward Lisa Turri led the team in scoring with three goals and one assist for four points, while goaltender Danielle Justice did not allow a goal and made 31 saves on the weekend.
On Friday, Gustavus led 1-0 after one period and 2-0 after two period, before breaking the game open with three goals in the third period and finishing with a 5-0 victory. Five different players scored for the Gusties including Lisa Turri, Gracie Olson, Alyssa Gaulrapp, Melissa Doyle, and Jess Harren. Gustavus outshot Concordia 38-22 and converted one of three power play opportunities. Justice played all 60 minutes in goal making 22 saves and registering the 14th shutout of her career.
On Saturday, Lisa Turri scored twice in the first five minutes of the game and the Gusties never looked back on their way to the 6-0 victory. Gustavus broke the game open in the final three minutes of the second period when Jess Harren (16:59), Lindsey Hjelm (18:10), and Allie Schwab (19:51) all scored to push the lead to 5-0. Alyssa Gaulrapp wrapped up the scoring with a goal just 22 seconds into the third period. The Gusties out-shot Concordia 45-15. Justice played the first two periods before Marah Sobczack stepped into the nets for the first time in her collegiate career. Sobczack made six saves and shared the shutout with Justice.
Gustavus opens MIAC play with a series against St. Olaf next weekend. The Gusties will host the Oles on Friday at 7:00 pm and then travel to St. Olaf on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
