Ryan Johnson’s power play goal at 2:10 of the third period allowed the Gustavus men’s hockey team to slip past Saint Mary’s University 2-1 in the second game of the MIAC Showcase played at Fogerty Arena in Blaine, Minn.  Johnson, a freshman forward from Blaine, gave the Gusties a 1-0 lead with a power play goal in the first period before scoring the gamewinner in the third period. Tyler Venne picked up the win in the nets for Gustavus.  He registered 29 saves.

After Johnson’s first goal staked the Gusties to a 1-0 lead at 5:12 mark of the first period, the Cardinals evened the score at 1-1 when Jimmy Becker scored a power play goal at the 6:15 mark.  The game remained tied until Johnson scored early in the third period.

Gustavus goaltender Tyler Venne, a sophomore from New Hope, turned in a strong performance in the net as he turned away 29 shots including several key saves on a couple of Cardinal rushes in the third period.  It was the first win of Venne’s collegiate career.

The Gusties open their 2010-11 home schedule against UW-Eau Claire next Friday, Nov. 5 at 7:05 pm at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
