The Gustavus Adolphus women’s soccer team recorded its fourth consecutive win of the season with a 9-0 victory over Central College on Friday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. Both teams had to bear through heavy downpours of rain during the match, yet the Gusties went on to out-shoot Central 19-to-8 in the match. Senior forward Ashley Anderson led the Gusties with five points in the match (2 G, 1 A).
The Gusties took a commanding 7-0 lead after the opening half, registering 11 shots to Central’s five shots within the frame.
Anderson got the Gusties out to an early lead with a goal at the 13:48 mark on an assist from Amanda Cartony. Anderson struck the back of the net again in the 18th minute for her second goal of the match, putting the Gusties up 2-0. Sophomore forward Kristin Moen scored her second goal of the season at the 20:36 mark. Fresh off a four-goal game on Wednesday afternoon against Martin Luther, first year midfielder Amanda Cartony found the net in the 29th minute on a Nicole Kwapick assist. Nora Christensen put the Gusties up 5-0 at the 33:10 mark, and Liz Underwood extended the lead to 6-0 at the 41:00 mark heading into halftime. Senior forward Karen Maus registered both assists on the final two Gustie goals of the half.
In the second half, Maggie Lane put Gustavus on top 7-0 on a Cartony assist in the 57th minute. Meghan McMillan scored her second goal of the season two minutes later on an assist coming from Anderson. Lizzy Kroker capped off the game with a goal at the 62:00 mark, making the score final at 9-0.
Gustavus goalkeeper Chelsea Bayer recorded six saves on her way to her fourth consecutive complete game shutout. Central goalkeeper Steph Hasken suffered the loss, allowing seven goals and making seven saves.
The Gustavus women’s soccer team will begin Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Wednesday, Sept. 15, when the Gusties travel to Northfield, Minn. to take on Carleton at 4:00 p.m.
