Men’s Soccer Opens Season With 2-0 Win Over Northland

The Gustavus men’s soccer team opened its 2010 season with a 2-0 win over Northland College at the Advantage Emblem Cup hosted by the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.

The Gustavus men’s soccer team opened its 2010 season with a 2-0 win over Northland College at the Advantage Emblem Cup hosted by the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.  The Gusties will play host St. Scholastica on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 pm.

Grant Steine gave the Gusties a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 27th minute (26:41) with an assist from Dan Jarrett.  Gustavus extended its lead to 2-0 when Evan Odean scored in the 66th minute (65:46).  Odean took a pass from Max Malmquist off a corner kick and beat Northland goalkeeper Matt Larsen.

Luke Strom and Steve Lundberg combined for the shutout in the nets for Gustavus.  Strom played the first 25 minutes before having to leave with an injury.  He made one save. Lundberg played the final 64 minutes of the match.

The win was the first for new Gustavus head coach Mike Middleton in his first match directing the Gustie men’s soccer program.
