Men’s Tennis Remains Perfect In MIAC Play With 8-1 Win At St. Olaf

The Gustavus men’s tennis team defeated St. Olaf 8-1 in Northfield on Saturday afternoon to finish MIAC regular season play with a perfect 9-0 record. This is the 25th consecutive season that the Gusties have posted an undefeated record in MIAC regular season play.

Gustavus opened the match by winning all three doubles matches in convincing fashion.  Amrik Donkena and Tyler Johnson defeated Knute Gunderson and Will Mitchell 8-4 at the #1 position, Patrick Clark and Kyle Olson defeated Brian Tolly and Nick Hubbard-Peters 8-4 at the #2 position, and Rodrigo Otero and Krishan Jethwa defeated Andy Catania and Charlie Reinertsen 8-5.

In singles play, the Gusties claimed five of six singles matches including Donkena at #1, Clark at #2, Tyler Johnson at #3, Daniel Pomeranc at #4, and Krishan Jethwa at #5.

The Gusties will be the #1 seed in the MIAC Post-Season Tournament, which will be hosted by Gustavus next Friday and Saturday.  The Gusties will get a bye in the first round on Friday and face the lowest remaining seed on Saturday at 11:30 am.  The winner of the MIAC Tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Team Championship.

Gustavus will close out its regular season with a non-conference match against Luther on Sunday at noon.  This match has important regional implications as the Gusties are currently ranked #6 in the most recent ITA Central Region rankings, while Luther is ranked #9.
