The Gustavus baseball team got a big doubleheader split with #1 ranked St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties won game one 5-4 in extra innings on an RBI base hit by Tim Miller that scored Andrew Woitas for the win. The Tommies rebounded in game two, defeating Gustavus decisively 10-2. Gustavus goes to 10-11 overall and 3-4 in the MIAC, while St. Thomas moves to 19-4 overall and 6-3 in the MIAC.
St. Thomas took an early lead in game one, scoring one run on three hits in both the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Gustavus responded with two runs in the third inning when Alan Woitas and Chad Eul each drove in runs to tie the game at 2-2 after three innings complete.
St. Thomas scored a run on an RBI triple by Brady Field in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 lead. Gustavus got its first lead of the game in the sixth inning when Alan Woitas hit an RBI single to put the Gusties up 4-3. Starting pitcher Andrew Woitas got the first two outs of the seventh inning, yet gave up a double to John Bauer and was replaced with Tim Miller. Andrew Woitas went six and two thirds innings, giving up four runs on nine hits. Tayler Rahm hit an RBI single that scored Bauer to tie the game at 4-4 one batter later.
Andew Woitas led the bottom of the ninth inning off with a single. He advanced second base on the throw from the outfield, and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Miller had the game-winning RBI on a single to left, giving Gusties the 5-4 win. Andrew Woitas with 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs in the game. Miller was 2-for-4 with two runs at the plate. Miller also got the win on the hill, going two and one third innings and giving up no runs and one hit, and improving to 2-2 on the season. St. Thomas’s Brandon Stone (0-2) suffered the loss, pitching two and two thirds innings and giving up one run on three hits.
St. Thomas grabbed the lead early in game two as well, going up 4-0 after the top of the third inning. Gustavus’s lone two runs would both come in the third inning when the Gusties got two runs on two hits. Willy Hanson hit a double to lead off the inning, and Andrew Woitas hit him in two batters later. Tim Miller reached base on an error, and later scored on an error by the second baseman one batter later to make the score 4-2.
St. Thomas would open up its lead with one run in the fifth inning, three runs in the sixth, and two runs in the seventh to go up 10-2. Starting pitcher Cody Sukalski (3-3) made it three innings and gave up four runs on seven hits. Matt Nelson got the win for St. Thomas and improved to 4-0 on the season. St. Thomas was 13-for-32 in game two, as Gustavus was 6-for-24. Andrew Woitas, Alan Woitas, Tory Herman, Brandon Boyd, and Willy Hanson were all 1-for-3 at the dish.
The Gustavus baseball team will face Buena Vista tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00pm in St. Peter, Minn.
