Men’s Tennis Stays Unbeaten In MIAC Play With 8-1 Win At Saint John’s

The Gustavus men’s tennis team improved its MIAC record to 4-0 with an 8-1 win at Saint John’s on Friday evening. Gustavus won the #1 and #2 doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead after doubles play and then swept the six singles matches without dropping a set on its way to the 8-1 victory.

The Gusties will have their unbeaten league mark put to the test on Saturday at 3 pm when they host Carleton at the Brown Outdoor Courts.

Gustavus jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the match as Amrik Donkena and Tyler Johnson defeated Luke Odegaard and Dutch Hansen 8-0 at #1 doubles and then Patrick Clark and Kyle Olson defeated Fabricia Moncada and Ian Hansen 8-3 at the #2 position.  The Johnnies cut the lead to 2-1 when Elliott Elm and Zach Shriwise knocked off the Gusties Rodrigo Otero and Krishan Jethwa 9-8 (7-5 in the tiebreaker) at the #3 position.

In singles play, Gustavus pulled away winning all six matches without dropping a set. Amrik Donkena defeated Fabricio Moncado 7-6 (4), 6-1 at the #1 spot, while Patrick Clark defeated Dutch Hansen 6-0, 7-5  at the #2 position.  The Gusties continued to roll in the middle of the lineup as Tyler Johnson defeated Ian Hansen 6-4, 6-1 at #3, and Daniel Pomeranc defeated Elliott Elm 6-3, 6-4 at #4.  Gustavus closed out singles play with Kyle Olson defeating Luke Odegaard 6-1, 6-1 at #5 and Rodrigo Otero defeating Justin Le Beaux 6-1, 6-4 at #6.

The Gusties snapped a three-match losing streak with the win over the Johnnies and improved to 9-7 overall.
