The Gustavus baseball team struggled to score runs in La Crosse, Wisc. on Monday afternoon, dropping a doubleheader to UW-La Crosse 5-1 and 3-1. Gustavus got five hits, yet left nine runners on base in game one. In game two, the Gusties got seven hits, but failed to bring in runners, leaving eight left stranded. Leading the Gusties on the day was Tory Herman (5-8) and Andrew Woitas (4-7).
UW-La Crosse’s Mitch Running got the win in game one, giving up one run on five hits in four and two thirds innings. Derek Eddie was the losing pitcher, as he gave up five runs (3 earned) on five hits in four innings.
Gustavus got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Herman got the inning started with a two-out triple to right center. Andrew Woitas singled to left one batter later to give the Gusties the opening run of the game. UW-La Crosse got on the board in the second inning, scoring three runs on three hits and taking a 3-1 lead. The Eagles would add two more runs on a two-run home run by Ryan McArthur in the fourth inning.
Only Herman and Andrew Woitas registered hits for Gustavus in game one, as Herman was 2-for-4 and Woitas was 3-for-4.
It was UW-La Crosse getting on the board first in game two. Two hitter Corey Geary reached base on a Kyle Rains error, and Jay Fanta followed with a two-run home run that gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Brandon Boyd led off the seventh inning with a triple and Chad Eul hit him in one batter later, cutting the lead to 3-1. UW-La Crosse pitcher Levi Adbank buckled down and got the remaining two outs to hold on to the 3-1 victory.
Adbank pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and striking out five. Andrew Woitas went five innings, giving up three runs (2 earned) on six hits. Gustavus was 12-for-53 on the day, as UW-La Crosse was 14-for-47. Gustavus drops to 7-7 overall on the season, as UW-La Crosse improves to 6-5.
The Gustavus baseball team will take on St. Olaf in a doubleheader on Wednesday in Northfield, Minn. beginning at 2:30pm.
