The Gustavus baseball team got back on the winning track with a 12-8 win over Elmurst College in a nine-inning game in Phoenix on Tuesday afternoon. The Gusties had big innings in the fourth and sixth, as they were able to score four runs in each to take a 10-2 lead. Adam Bren was the winning pitcher, going six innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits. Gustavus is now 6-4 on the season.
Gustavus totaled 16 hits in the game, as seven different Gustavus players had two or more hits. Chad Eul had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and a double. Andrew Woitas went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Erik Sven was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a triple. Despite scoring twelve runs, the Gusties left the bases loaded twice in the game.
The Gustavus relief pitching struggled in the later innings, giving up one run in the seventh, four in the eighth, and one in the ninth. Ryan Michaelis came in to close the ninth inning, holding Elmhurst to just one run for the save.
The Gustavus baseball team will wrap up it’s Spring Training trip tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader against Oberlin College beginning at 11:00pm (CDT).
