The Gustavus men’s nordic ski team compiled 100 points over the weekend to finish in sixth place at the CCSA Ski Championships held at the Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming, Mich. on Saturday and Sunday. Jens Brabbit was the top Gustavus skier with a pair of top ten finishes. Brabbit took fourth in the 20km freestyle with a time of 51:01.7, and ninth in the 10km classic with a time of 27:47.9.
Taking first place with 162 points was Northern Michigan University, as the University of Alaska Fairbanks finished second with 158 points, and Michigan Tech University placed third with 120 points.
Other top Gustavus finishers in the 10km classic on Saturday were Anders Bowman and Peter Larsen. Bowman finished 16th with a time of 28:24.6, as Larsen placed 39th with a time of 30:11.6. Taking first place was Michigan Tech’s Oskar Lund, crossing the finish line in 26:39.7. The Gusties scored 48 points on Saturday.
The team scored 52 points in the freestyle on Sunday, as Bowman joined Brabbit in the top 15. Bowman placed 14th with a time of 52:17.9, as he turned in his best weekend of his career. Larsen placed 36th (57:46.6), as Andrew Poffenberger took 38th (57:54.9). UW-Green Bay’s Santiago Ocariz was the top skier on Sunday, finishing first with a time of 48:42.6.
The Gustavus men’s nordic ski team will travel to Houghton, Mich. next weekend to compete in the NCAA Central Region Championships on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 20-21.
With a Brabbit as a rabbit, it’s no surprise that Bowman has become a GOman.
