The Gustavus gymnastics team compiled 172.75 points to finish in third place at the Best of Minnesota Invite held in the Sports Pavilion on the campus of the University of Minnesota Saturday night.  The University of Minnesota won the meet with 194.950 points, as Winona State University took second with 178.725 points and Hamline University took fourth with 167.80 points.

The Gusties compiled individual event scores of 46.075 on the vault, 40.900  on the uneven parallel bars, 41.375 on the balance beam, and 44.400 on the floor exercise.

Danielle Thibodeau registered the highest Gustavus finish of the evening with a mark of 9.500 on the floor, placing her in second behind Gopher Amber Hammerschmidt who took first with a score of 9.775.  Thibodeau also placed fourth in the all-around with a point total of 35.825.  Kelly Mathewson had a solid night with a pair of sixth place finishes on the vault (9.375) and bars (9.375).

The University of Minnesota swept the podium on all events but the floor exercise.  Minnesota’s Alexis Russell was all-around champion with a score of 39.325, while taking first place on the vault (9.775), bars (9.850), and floor (9.875).  Russell’s teammate Kristin Furukawa took first on the beam with a mark of 9.875.

The Gustavus gymnastics team will hit the mats next on Feb 12, as the Gusties will travel to St. Paul to take on Hamline University in a dual meet scheduled for 6:00pm.
