Men’s Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep With 5-3 Win Over Marian

The Gustavus men’s hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Marian University with a 5-3 win over the Sabres on Sunday afternoon in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The Gusties got third period goals from Tony Palma and David Martinson to break a 3-3 tie and claim the 5-3 victory.

The Gusties got third period goals from Tony Palma and David Martinson to break a 3-3 tie and claim the 5-3 victory.  Tyler Venne picked up the win in the nets for Gustavus.

Eric Bigham and T.J. Ridley scored first period goals and the Gusties led 2-1 after the first 20 minutes.

Brad Wieck scored with 30 seconds left in the second period to give Gustavus a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.

Marian scored early in the third period to tie the score at 3-3, but Tony Palma scored what turned out to be the game-winner at the 14:48 mark.  David Martinson secured the win with a power play goal at the 19:13 mark.

Tyler Venne registered his first collegiate win in the nets for the Gusties.  He turned away 23 shots and allowed three goals.

Gustavus, which has now won six straight games, improves to 9-3-1 overall.  The Gusties will continue non-conference play next weekend with a non-conference contest at St. Olaf on Friday followed by a matchup with UW-Stout on Saturday in St. Peter.
