The Gustavus men’s hockey team picked up an important two points with a 4-0 win over St. Thomas at the St. Thomas Ice Rink in Mendota Heights on Friday night. Josh Swartout was impressive in the nets for the Gusties as he recorded 31 saves and posted his first shutout of the season. Four different players scored for Gustavus including David Martinson, Mitch Carlson, Ryan Noonan, and Eric Bigham.
After a scoreless first period, Gustavus took a 1-0 lead when David Martinson scored 90 seconds into the second frame. Mitch Carlson quickly increased the lead to 2-0 when he lit the lamp just over a minute later. The Gusties maintained their 2-0 lead throughout the second period.
Midway through the third period, Gustavus bunched two more goals together as Ryan Noonan scored at the 11:50 mark and then Eric Bigham closed out the scoring with a goal at the 13:41 mark.
The big story for Gustavus was the sterling effort turned in by goaltender Josh Swartout. The junior, who earned all-conference honors last year, stymied the Tommies at every turn as he made 31 saves including several of the spectacular variety. The shutout was Swartout’s first of the season and fourth of his career.
The Gusties and Tommies will wrap up the series on Saturday evening at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter. Game time is set for 7:05 pm.
