Volleyball Team Finishes 2-2 At UW-Eau Claire Invitational

The Gustavus volleyball team split its two games on the second and final day of the UW-Eau Claire Invitational Tournament. The Gusties defeated the College of St. Scholastica 3-0. The scores for the sets were 25-21, 26-24, and 25-12. The Gusties lost their second game of the day to UW-Eau Claire by scores of 18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 19-25, and 3-15. The Gusties record now stands at 2-3 on the season.

Middle hitter Meghan Gehring led the attack for Gustavus as she registered 13 kills in the first match against St. Scholastica. Setters Malea Noennig and Sam Broderius continued their consistent play and recorded 36 assists between them, with Noennig getting 21 and Borderius with 15. Erin Sherman contributed 14 digs in the winning effort. St. Scholastica was led by Paige Hardy’s nine kills and 11 digs.

In the second match, the Gusties nearly beat an undefeated UW-Eau Claire team after going up two sets to one, but then lost the two final sets to seal the match. Gehring led the Gustavus attack once again, registering 12 kills. She was followed by Olivia Warren’s 11 kills, Angela Ahrendt’s 10, along with Nicki Ainsworth and Abby Roff who each had nine. Noennig had 25 assists for the Gusties and Broderius chipped in with 20. Defensive specialist Erin Sherman led the team with 24 digs, and Noennig reached double digits in that category with 11. UW-Eau Claire was led by Blair Murphy’s 18 kills and 18 digs.

Gehring was also named to the All-Tournament Team. Members of the team include Gehring, Debra Leganski of Judson, Kate Mikutowski of UW-Stout, Alicia Mizer of UW-Stout, Liz Amici of UW-Eau Claire, and Lindsey Smith from UW-Eau Claire.

Gustavus continues their string of road games as they travel to Mankato to face Bethany Lutheran College on Tuesday, September 8, at 7:00 p.m.
