Just when it seemed like the Gustavus men’s soccer team was going to register a hard-fought 1-0 win over visiting Whitworth University, Kekoa Mountcastle scored just over a minute remaining in regulation play to tie the score at 1-1. The two teams played scoreless soccer through two 10 minute overtimes and the result was a 1-1 tie. The Gustavus goal was scored by Justin Eglseder in the 62nd minute with an assist from Fraser Horton.
The two teams played a spirited first half with much of the action taking place in the midfield. Neither could muster a real strong scoring opportunity. The Gusties only placed two shots on goal, while the Pirates were not able to put a shot on goal and the score was 0-0 after the first 45 minutes.
Gustavus took a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute when defender Justin Eglseder scored with an assist from Fraser Horton.
The Gusties held on to their very slim lead until the very end of regulation play when Mountcastle scored an unassisted goal allowing Whitworth to force the overtime.
The game was very evenly played statistically as Whitworth outshot Gustavus 9-8, while the Gusties held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Gustavus goalkeeper Luke Strom allowed one goal and made three saves, while Whitworth goalkeeper Brian Sherpe allowed one goal and made four saves.
The Gusties, who are now 1-0-1 on the season will play Pacific Lutheran University in St. Peter on Monday afternoon. Whitworth, which was playing its first match of the season, will play at St. Thomas in St. Paul on Monday at 3:00 pm.
