The Gustavus women’s soccer team opened up the 2009 season with an impressive 5-0 road victory over the University of Minnesota-Morris on Tuesday afternoon. The Gusties were led in scoring by Meghan McMillan with two goals, and Rachel Iblings with one goal and two assists. Gustavus goalkeeper Chelsea Bayer posted a shutout stopping four shots on net. The Gusties play next at home on Friday, September 4, against Martin Luther College at 5:00pm.

Nicole Kwapick scored the first, and eventual game-winning goal for Gustavus, at the 37:49 mark of the first half. Seven minutes later, Becca Hagen widened the gap on a goal with the assist from Iblings at 44:55 to give the Gusties a 2-0 halftime lead. Gustavus controlled the first half, outshooting Minnesota-Morris 13-3.

The Gusties picked up where they left off in the second half as Meghan McMillan scored 16 minutes into the period with an assist from Iblings. Less than two minutes later, Iblings connected a goal of her own, with the assist from Ashley Anderson. McMillan notched her second goal in the 89th minute to make the final score 5-0. The Gusties outshot Minnesota-Morris 22-1 in the second half, and 35-4 for the game.
