Women’s Indoor Track and Field Captures Second At MIAC Championships Posted on March 7th, 2009 by

Strong performances in the shot put helped the Gustavus women’s indoor track and field clinch a second place finish with 107.3 points at the MIAC Indoor Championships which were held at Concordia College. Lisa Brown (Sr., Lake Crystal, Minn.), Kaelene Lundstrum (Jr., Bird Island, Minn.), and Sam Broderius (So., Hector, Minn.) helped the Gusties sweep the podium stand in the shot put by earning first through third place to highlight the second day of competition.

St. Thomas won its 10th consecutive team title with 101.5 points, followed by Gustavus with 107.3, Saint Benedict with 97.3, Bethel with 79.3, Concordia with 77.5, Carleton with 65, St. Catherine with 54.5, Hamline with 54, St. Olaf with 35, Saint Mary’s with 27, Augsburg with 17, and Macalester with 5.

Brown, a three-time conference champion in the javelin during the outdoor season, won her first shot put title with a NCAA provisional throw of 43′ 3″ on her first attempt. Lundstrum recorded a distance of 41′ 0.5″ for second, while Broderius finished third at 40′ 11.75″ to earn all-conference. Lundstrum also defended her 2008 high jump title when she cleared a height of 5′ 5.75″ on her final attempt to win her second individual title of the championships.

In addition to Brown, Lundstrum, and Broderius receiving all-conference honors, Laura Lynch (Sr., Waunakee, Wis.) also garnered all-conference recognition after finishing third in the triple jump (35′ 4.75″).

Other strong Gustavus performances included Becca Bryson (Jr., Alden, Minn.) finishing seventh in the triple jump (34′ 3.5″), Megan Lundgren (So., Mankato, Minn.) placing seventh in the 600 meters (1:39.63), Lindsey TeBrake (Sr., Shakopee, Minn.) placing eighth in the high jump (5′ 0.25″)

Two Gustavus relay teams earned points as the 4×400 meter relay claimed fourth (4:09.04) and the 4×200 meter relay took seventh (1:51.19). Members of the 4×400 team included Elizabeth Pringle (Sr., Northfield, Minn.), Abby Karl (So., St. Cloud, Minn.), Janey Helland (So., Mapleton, Minn.), and Lundgren. The 4×200 relay team consisted of Sam Frings (Fy., Coleraine, Minn.), Lundgren, Dani Serbus (So., Franklin, Minn.), and Julia Thompson (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.).
