The Gustavus men’s tennis team opened its fall season by taking eight players to the Drake Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa. John Kauss dropped his first match in the “A” Flight of singles and then won his next four matches to claim the consolation title in the “A” Flight. The Gusties were the lone Division III program in the tournament with four other Division I programs.
Players participating in the tournament included Kauss, Mike Burdakin, Charlie Paukert, Kevin Stickney, Nick Hansen, Ashok Jethwa, David Koppel, and Krishan Jethwa.
In singles play, Kaus wrapped up the weekend with a record of 4-1, while Krishan Jethwa finished at 3-1, Burdakin, Hansen, and Ashok Jethwa also finished at 2-1. Paukert and Koppel posted marks of 1-2, and Stickney finished at 0-2.
In doubles play, Kaus and Burdakin and Paukert and Koppel each posted records of 2-1, while Ashok and Krishan Jethwa and Stickney and Hansen finished at 0-1.
Gustavus will host the ITA/Wilson Midwest Regional and the Fall Invitational this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Swanson Tennis Center and the Brown Outdoor Courts.
