The Gustavus women’s tennis defeated UW-Whitewater 6-0 in the second round of the NCAA Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon in St. Peter. The host Gusties will face Wheaton on Saturday at 12 p.m. in St. Peter with the winner advancing to the NCAA Team Championships on May 13-15 at Gustavus. Gustavus improved to 23-8 overall, while UW-Whitewater finished its season at 21-9.
Coach Heidi Carlson’s squad opened up a 3-0 lead after completing a sweep of all doubles matches. Laura Arnebeck and Jenny Arnfelt earned the No. 3 doubles point for the Gusties after defeating Amy Siemon and Brittany Gering 8-4. Jenni White and Sierra Krebsbach followed suit at No. 1 doubles with the score of 8-5 over Lauren Fahl and Tiffany Dawson. The No. 2 doubles contest between Gustavus’ Sam Frank and Ali O’Neal and UW-Whitewater’s Ingrid Stensvaag and Michelle Daciolas was tied at 5-5 before the Gusties pulled out the match 8-5.
Gustavus continued to extend its lead to 4-0 after Jenni White defeated Ingrid Stensvaag 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Due to simultaneous finishes, the Gusties received their two remaining points from Sierra Krebsbach at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Erica Dobson at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
Coach Carlson’s squad defeated upcoming opponent Wheaton 5-2 in its only meeting of the season on April 4 at the Midwest Invitational in Madison, Wis.
