Baseball Team Splits With Macalester, Winning Streak Comes To A Halt at Nine Games Posted on April 20th, 2008 by

The Gustavus baseball team saw its nine-game win streak come to an end at Macalester on Sunday afternoon. The Gusties won game one 10-5, but then dropped game two 5-3. Coach Mike Carroll’s squad is now 17-9 overall and 9-1 in MIAC play.

In game one, Gustavus scored twice in the second, twice in the third, and four times in the fourth and led 8-4 after four innings and held on for the 10-5 victory. Spencer Campion was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI, while leadoff hitter Nate Ruff was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Dave Wold pitched four innings allowing five earned runs on six hits and was credited with the win. Chad Schnettler pitched the final three innings and did not allow a run. He shut the Scots down on two hits in three innings of work and was credited wih the save.

In game two, Macalester jumped all over freshman starter Cody Sukalski scoring five times in the first three innings to hold a 5-2 lead. Gustavus threatened several times in their final four at-bats, but could not ever get the key hit to score the baserunners. Robby Wiens led the Gusties with two hits in three at-bats. Cody Sukalski suffered the loss on the mound.

Gustavus will host Saint Mary’s in a conference doubleheader on Monday, followed by a conference doubleheader at St. Olaf on Wednesday and wrapping up with a doubleheader against St. Thomas on Saturday (4/26).

The 9-0 start in conference regular season play was the second longest streak in the program’s history.
