The Gustavus baseball team moved to 4-0 in conference play with a doubleheader sweep against Concordia in Moorhead on Sunday afternoon. The Gusties scored five times in the sixth inning and twice in the seventh inning to win game one 9-8 and then used timely hitting and a great pitching performance from Adam Bren to claim game two 3-1.
Tyler Kaus went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI and Nate Ruff was 2-for-4 with two RBI in game one. Kaus doubled in both the sixth and seventh innings to ignite the Gustie rally, while Ruff tripled to drive in Kaus in the sixth and singled to drive in what turned out to be the winning run in the top of the seventh. Chad Schnettler was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Kraig Olson and Charlie Cicalello was credited with a save.
Mike DesLauriers led the Gusties at the plate in game two as he went 3-for-3 and scored the first run. Pat Siering drove in a run to make the score 2-0 in the top of the third inning and Tyler Kaus drove in the third run with a single in the seventh inning. Sophomore pitcher Adam Bren turned in the finest performance of his young career as he allowed just two hits, while striking out four and walking one in recording the complete game victory.
The Gusties, who are now 12-8 overall and 4-0 in MIAC play, will host Bethel (9-9, 1-2) in their home opener on Monday, April 14 at 2:30 pm.
