Men’s Hockey Defeats Concordia 10-1, Will Host First Round Of MIAC Playoffs

The Gustavus men’s hockey team exploded for six goals in the first period and rolled to a 10-1 win over Concordia on Saturday afternoon at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter, Minn. With the win, the Gusties finished in fourth place in the final MIAC standings and earned the #4 seed in the MIAC Post-Season Tournament. Gustavus will now host #5 seed Saint John’s on Thursday, Feb. 28. Time has not yet been determined.

Six different players scored for Gustavus, however David Martinson led the way with three goals, followed by Mitch Carlson and Tim Ornell with two goals each.

Gustavus led 6-1 after the first period. Martinson tallied the pure hat trick with three goals in a single period. Mitch Carlson added two goals and Tim Ornell added one goal.

There was no scoring in the second period and then the Gusties erupted for four more goals in the third period. The goals were scored by Ornell,his second of the game, Joe Welch, Casey Dynan, and Patrick Dynan.

Josh Swartout picked up the win in the nets. He recorded 16 saves. The Gusties outshot the Cobbers 42-17.

The 10 goals scored by Gustavus are the most since Jan. 8, 2006 when the Gusties beat UM-Crookston 10-2. Gustavus has scored 10 goals in a game three times since Brett Petersen was named the head coach in the 2000-01 season.

Gustavus finished the regular season with a record of 13-11-1 overall and 10-6-0 in the MIAC.
