The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s soccer team continues to earn post-season awards for success on and off the field. Senior forward Mike Butterworth and sophomore midfielder Fraser Horton have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Far West region and the D3Kicks.com West region teams. Senior midfielder Jack Underwood joined Butterworth and Horton on the NSCAA All-Far West region team, as well as being named to the NSCAA Scholar All-American team. Junior defender Flynn Stewart-Franzen was also named to the D3Kicks.com West region team.
Butterworth (Katy, Texas), a two-time NSCAA All-Far West region and D3Kicks.com West region selection (second teams, 2006; first teams, 2007), spent the 2007 season as the catalyst of a Gustie offense that was fourth in the MIAC in goals scored with 36, including 15 in conference play. He led the team with 15 goals and 33 points and is tied for eighth place all-time on the Gustavus career goals list with 26. Butterworth is also tied for eighth on the Gustavus career points list with 67.
Horton (Missoula, Mont.), a second team NSCAA All-Far West region and D3Kicks.com West region pick, played in 19 games this season at center midfield for the Gusties. He recorded two goals and seven points this season, including an overtime goal in a 1-0 victory over Bethel.
Underwood (Fergus Falls, Minn.), a third team NSCAA All-Far West region selection, started every game for Gustavus at midfield during the 2007 season. Underwood played in 50 consecutive matches as the team posted a record of 39-8-3. Primarily a defensive midfielder, he was part of a team that has recorded 43 shutouts in its past 59 games.
Underwood also became the first player in Gustavus men’s soccer history to be named to the NSCAA Scholar All-American team. A political science major with a 3.96 grade point average, he was chosen as a second team honoree in the College Division, which includes all non-Division I schools.
Stewart-Franzen (Minneapolis, Minn.) was selected as a second team D3Kicks.com West region member. Stewart-Franzen has started in 43 consecutive games, including every game this season. He has been part of a defensive unit that has allowed just 20 goals over 43 games.
Gustavus earned a share of the MIAC Championship for the fourth consecutive year. The Gusties went on to win the MIAC Playoff Championship and earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season. The Gusties compiled a record of 16-4-1 overall and 9-1-0 in the MIAC during the 2007 season.
