The Gustavus men’s hockey team moved to 2-0 on the season with an impressive 4-2 win at #2 St. Norbert on Saturday evening. Rory Dynan scored what turned out to be the gamewinner at 12:33 of the second period. Patrick Dynan solidified the win with an empty net goal with :20 left in regulation play. Matt Lopes proved to be the difference in the nets for the Gusties as the junior transfer made 27 saves in the game.
The Gusties took a 1-0 lead when David Martinson scored at the 19:43 mark of the first period. Gustavus extended its lead to 2-0 when Ben Ollila scored at the 7:41 mark of the second period. St. Norbert erased the 2-0 lead in a hurry scoring twice in a two minute period in the middle of the second period. Nick Tabisz picked up the first goal at the 9:57 mark and then Matt Boyd knotted the score at 2-2 with a goal at the 11:45 mark.
Gustavus bounced right back with a goal just :48 seconds later giving the Gusties a 3-2 lead and silencing the partisan Green Knight crowd. Gustavus took its 3-2 lead into the third period.
St. Norbert came out the locker room ready to challenge the Gusties and they peppered Gustavus netminder Matt Lopes with 15 shots. Lopes, however was up to the challenge as he shut Green Knights out with several impressive saves. Lopes made 27 saves in 60 minutes of play and kept the Gusties in the game. St. Norbert out-shot Gustavus 29-13 in the contest.
The Gusties will now face UW-River Falls in River Falls next Friday, before returning home to face UW-Stout on Saturday night.
