The Gustavus football team fell to 4-5 overall and 2-5 in the MIAC with a 34-24 loss to Concordia at Lloyd Hollingsworth Field in St. Peter, Minn. on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties were not able to slow down the vaunted Cobber running game as Concordia carried 60 times for 225 yards and four touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Chad Arlt had another big day as he made 11 catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Gusties.
The Cobbers scored three times in the first half and led 20-17 at the intermission. Concordia’s touchdowns were recorded by Nick Reinisch on a nine-yard run, a two-yard run by Adam Swingdorf, and a three-yard run by Adam Swingdorf. The Gusties countered with two Jordan Stolp to Chad Arlt touchdown passes and a 20-yard field goal by John Ostertag.
Concordia increased its lead to 27-17 early in the third quarter when Jesse Nelson threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jake Krause. The Cobbers iced the win early in the fourth quarter when Adam Swingdorf scored his second touchdown of the day on a one-yard run.
Gustavus closed out the scoring with five minutes left in the game when Jordan Stolp completed an eight-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Maurer making the final score 34-24.
The Gusties finished the game with 386 yards of total offense, while the Cobbers totalled 416 yards of total offense. Gustavus was led by Jordan Stolp who completed 28-of-43 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns. Concordia was led by junior quarterback Jesse Nelson who rushed 21 times for 98 yards and completed 14-of-19 passes for 191 yards and one touchdown.
Gustavus will complete its season next Saturday at home against Carleton. The Cobbers completed their season with a record of 7-3 overall and 5-3 in the MIAC.
