The Gustavus men’s soccer team posted its fifth consecutive shutout with a 2-0 victory over Saint Mary’s Tuesday in Winona. Bret Vander Streek and Fraser Horton scored goals midway through the second half to put Gustavus on the board. Luke Strom and Trevor Brown combined to earn the shutout. Gustavus improved to 8-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the MIAC. Saint Mary’s fell to 2-6-1 overall and 0-3-0 in MIAC play.

Despite having a 5-0 edge in corner kicks, Gustavus was unable to score on the Cardinals in the first half. Bret Vander Streek (Pella, Iowa) got Gustavus on the board in the 67th minute scoring his third goal of the season on a pass from Jack Underwood (Fergus Falls, Minn.). Coach Zelenz’s squad struck again less than five minutes later as Fraser Horton (Missoula, Mont.) scored his first goal of the season at the 72:17 mark with the assist going to Ryan Beduhn (St. Cloud, Minn.).

The Gusties held an 18-7 shot advantage over Saint Mary’s along with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Jon Szafranski made six saves in the losing effort. Luke Strom started in net for Gustavus, before Trevor Brown entered the game in the second half to record his 6-0-0.

Gustavus has posted four consecutive MIAC shutouts bringing its conference record to 4-0-0 and 8-1-0 overall. The team will play Carleton on Saturday at 1:00 pm in Northfield.
