The Gustavus men’s soccer team avenged last year’s 1-0 overtime loss to St. John’s by winning 1-0 Saturday afternoon in Collegeville. An early second half goal by Dane Obermeyer allowed the Gusties to build its current winning streak to four games. Goalkeeper Trevor Brown recorded his fifth consecutive shutout of the season. Gustavus is 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the MIAC, while St. John’s fell to 2-2-2 overall and 0-2-1 in MIAC play.

After a scoreless first half, Gustavus quickly got on the scoreboard in the second half. Dane Obermeyer (Los Alamos, NM) scored his first goal of the season at the 48:43 mark on a pass from Bret Vander Streek (Pella, IA) to put the Gusties ahead for good.

St. John’s pressured the Gustavus defense by getting off 11 shots on goal compared to only seven for Gustavus. Trevor Brown (Madison, WI) came up big between the posts for the Gusties recording the shutout with 11 saves. Brown’s current shutout streak is the longest since Andrew Moulton posted 11 consecutive shutouts in 2004. Coach Zelenz’s squad has yet to give up a goal in MIAC competition this season.

The Gusties will meet St. Mary’s on Tuesday at 4:00 pm in Winona, then travel to Carleton on Saturday for a key MIAC matchup in Northfield at 1:00 pm.
