Heidi Carlson has been named the head women’s tennis coach at Gustavus Adolphus College. Carlson, who has been the assistant women’s coach for the past ten years, replaces her husband Jon Carlson, who will now serve as the assistant coach for the program.

Heidi, a 1993 graduate of Gustavus, was a key member of the 1990 NCAA National Championship team, and also played on three conference championship teams during her standout four-year career. She earned All-America honors in 1992 when she advanced to the NCAA doubles semifinals with partner Tracey Erickson. In 1990, as a first year player, Heidi and her doubles partner Molly McCormick won the doubles match that allowed the Gusties to defeat UC-San Diego 5-4 and win the national title.

Since Heidi joined Jon as an assistant coach for the women’s tennis program in 1997, the Gusties have won 10 consecutive MIAC titles and made 10 consecutive appearances in the NCAA National Tournament.

The women’s tennis team will begin its fall season this weekend at the University of Minnesota Invitational. Next weekend, the team will host the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional, which will begin on Friday, Sept. 21 and conclude on Sunday, Sept. 23.
