Women’s Tennis Defeats St. Ben’s 9-0, Claims 16th Straight MIAC Title

The Gustavus women’s tennis team posted a convincing 9-0 win over the College of St. Benedict on Wednesday afternoon on the Brown Outdoor Courts at the Swanson Tennis Center. With the win, the Gusties laid claim to their 16th consecutive conference title and extended their conference regular season dual match winning streak to 166 matches (dating back to 1990).

Coach Jon Carlson’s squad got off to a fast start by sweeping all three doubles matches. Lauren Hom and Sierra Krebsbach defeated Megan Tiegs and Megan Wrobel 8-3 at the #1 position, while Jaime Gaard and Jenni White defeated Jen Kling and Christine Long 8-3 at the #2 position, and Darcy Haubrick and Hannah Frericks defeated Angela Sigl and Beth Yokiel 8-3 at the #3 position.

In singles play, the Gusties won all six matches in straight sets. The closest match was at #1 singles where Lauren Hom defeated Megan Tiegs 6-2, 6-4. The results of the other five matches were:

#5 position – Hannah Frericks (GAC) def. Christine Long (CSB) 6-0, 6-0
#6 position – Darcy Haubrick (GAC) def. Laura Wermager (CSB) 6-1, 6-2

Four seniors who have been key members of the Gustavus women’s tennis team for the past four years played their final regular season match at the Brown Tennis Courts on Wednesday. That group includes Jaime Gaard, Lauren Hom, Darcy Haubrick, and Hannah Frericks. All four have posted more then 50 wins in both singles and doubles in their careers and helped Gustavus post a mark of 108-21 overall and 40-0 in conference play during that period.

Gustavus will now be the #1 seed at the MIAC Post-Season Tournament this weekend which will be played on Friday and Saturday and both St. Olaf and Carleton. As the top seed, the Gusties receive a bye in the first round on Friday and will open play in the semifinals on Saturday morning. The full schedule for the MIAC Tournament is below:
