The Gustavus Adolphus College baseball team moved to 3-1 on the Spring Trip with a 13-0 win Saturday afternoon over Thomas College (Maine) in Chandler, Ariz. The teams were originally scheduled for a doubleheader, but weather and scheduling conflicts forced the teams to play a single nine-inning game.
Gustavus plated runs in the second (2), third (1), fifth (2), sixth (3), and seventh innings (1) to take a 9-0 lead before closing out the scoring with four runs in the eighth, including three brought in by Robby Wiens, who came off the bench and belted a three-run pinch-hit homerun.
Freshman Adam Bren scattered seven hits in seven innings to record his first collegiate win. Jake Krugel pitched the final two innings for the Gusties.
Mike DesLauriers led the Gusties, going 3-for-4 on the day. Tyler Kaus finished 2-for-4 with a triple, a stolen base, and a RBI. Pat Siering also went 2-for-4 at the plate, collecting a pair of RBIs. Shea Roehrkasse was only 1-for-4 but ended up with two RBIs.
As a team, the Gusties collected 13 hits and had four sacrifice flies. Gustavus also turned four double plays during the game, including a pair from the outfield as Tony Konicek and Kaus each threw out a baserunner after making an out on a fly ball.
Gustavus will face Middlebury in a doubleheader Sunday to wrap up their Spring Trip.
