Women’s Tennis Posts Wins Over UW-Green Bay and MSU, Mankato

The Gustavus women’s tennis team improved to 4-2 on the season with a 7-0 win over the University of Wisconsin at Green Bay in Appleton, Wis. on Saturday afternoon and a 6-3 win over Minnesota State, Mankato at the Swanson Tennis Center on Saturday night in St. Peter.

In Appleton, Wis., the Gusties got off to a quick start against Division I UW-Green Bay winning all three doubles matches and claiming the doubles point. At the #1 position, Lauren Hom and Sierra Krebsbach def. Heather Harding/Jennifer Tan 8-4. Jaime Gaard and Hannah Frericks clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 win over Aschley Jurgella and Lauryn Grimando at the #2 position. Darcy Haubrick and Jenni White completed the sweep with an 8-1 win over Amy Meissner and Laura Bartingale at the #3 position.

In singles play, Lauren Hom extended the lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) win over Heather Harding. Jaime Gaard had to go to the superbreaker to defeat Jennifer Tan 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 at the #2 position. Leading 3-0, the Gusties cruised the rest of the way picking up straight set wins at the #3 through #6 positions. Jenni White defeated Aschley Jurgella 6-2, 6-2 at #3, Hannah Frericks defeated Laura Bartingale 6-3, 6-3 at #4, Sierra Krebsbach defeated Amy Meissner 6-1, 7-5 at #5, and Darcy Haubrick defeated Kari Petrashek 6-0, 6-2 at the #6 position.

In St. Peter, the Gusties won two of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches to post a 6-3 win over local rival Minnesota State, Mankato. Depth was the key for Gustavus as the squad lost at #1 doubles and #1 and #2 singles, but swept the rest of the matches. Laura Arnebeck picked up a key win for the Gusties at #3 singles when she dropped the first set to Sarah Westman, but then rallied to win the match by winning the second set 6-0, and the superbreaker 10-3. Others posting singles wins for Gustavus included Jill Bailey (#4), Erica Dobson (#5), and Christine Reimer (#6).

In doubles play, Laura Arnebeck and Christine Reimer defeated Paige Burke and Sarah Westman 8-3
and Jenny Arnfelt and Jill Bailey defeated Liz Retzlaff and Lindsey Schmidt 8-5.

The Gustavus women’s tennis team will not compete next weekend, but will return to action on March 3 with home matches against Hamline and Southwest State at the Swanson Tennis Center.
