The Gustavus Adolphus women’s hockey team defeated UW-Superior 4-2 Tuesday night in Superior, Wis. The second-rated Gusties behind two goals from Stefanie Ubl (Jr., Blaine, Minn./Blaine) and two assists from Andrea Peterson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake), ran their record to 16-1-0 on the season with the win over the fifth-ranked Yellowjackets.

Ubl gave the Gusties a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at the 14:01 mark of the first period, putting the puck past Yellowjacket goalie Melissa Kunzelman off an assist from Peterson. Peterson also assisted on Gustavus’ second score of the evening, a power-play goal by Molly Doyle (Jr., Eagan, Minn./Eagan) just 45 seconds into the second period.

The Yellowjackets cut the lead in half near the end of the second period as Kim Schmeichel netted her fourth of the year with a power-play goal at the 16:03 mark. Brittany Dunkel and Ashley Jenkins were credited with assists.

Melissa Mackley (FY, Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) extended the Gustavus lead back to two goals at 3-1 when she scored unassisted at 0:31 of the third period. Mackley’s goal proved to be the eventual game-winner. Midway through the third, UW-Superior’s Susie Crabb notched her first goal of the season, beating Gustie goalie Sarah Windhorst (FY, Eden Prairie, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s) to draw within a goal at 3-2.

Ubl added an empty-net goal with one second remaining on the clock to provide the final margin. Jessie Doig (So., New Prague, Minn./New Prague) and Margaret Dorer (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Anthony) were credited with assists on the goal.

Windhorst improved to 8-0-0 on the season, making 17 saves, while Kunzelman made 34 saves but fell to 7-2-0.

Gustavus extended its nation-leading winning streak to 16 games.

Margaret Dorer moved past Kenzie Stensland (75 points; 1999-2002) for 15th on the career points list with 76 career points. Dorer also moved ahead of Abby Randall (52 points; 2002-06) for eighth place on the career assists list with 53.

Molly Doyle scored her 12th career power-play goal, tying her with Randall for fifth all-time.

Andrea Peterson (74g-96a-170pts.) needs one point to tie Emily Quizon of Middlebury College (2003-06) for fourth place on the NCAA Division III Women’s Hockey Career Points list with 171. UW-Superior’s Erin Kegley (86g-70a-156pts.), who was held without a point Tuesday, is currently one place behind Peterson in sixth place. Peterson also needs only four assists to become just the fourth Division III women’s player to record 100 career assists.

Gustavus has a key MIAC series this weekend (Feb. 2-3) when they face St. Thomas.
